Headlining our second collaboration and full building activation with Oakland’s SMARTBOMB arts collective, drummer, electronic musician, DJ, and producer Shigeto performed on the Miner Auditorium stage with his trio featuring keyboardist Ian Fink and saxophonist Marcus Elliot.
Born in Ann Arbor and based in Detroit, Zach Shigeto Saginaw is a masterful musician and producer whose work seamlessly melds soul, hip-hop, and various strains of contemporary electronic music with deep immersion in the jazz continuum and the intangible flavor of the Motor City.
Starting on his path as a drummer and always keeping that penchant for sinuous rhythms front and center, Shigeto released Full Circle, his debut for the Ghostly International label, in 2009, followed by a procession of exploratory albums and EPs. In 2015 and 2016, he collaborated with trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas for High Risk and Dark Territory, a pair of critically acclaimed albums for Douglas’s Greenleaf label with a quartet including bassist Jonathan Maron and drummer Mark Guiliana.
Shigeto’s 2024 Ghostly International album Cherry Blossom Baby is his first full-length release in seven years, featuring fellow Detroit producer/musicians Cleveland Thrasher, KESSWA, and Tammy Lakkis.
