Enter the mind of vibraphonist, multi-percussionist, and composer Warren Wolf — a current member of the SFJAZZ Collective and an in-demand bandleader and sideman. Performing the Steve Swallow composition “Falling Grace” on the Miner Auditorium stage, Wolf talks about approaching his instrument in a way that crosses perceived boundaries of specific instrumental norms or limitations, how the presence of an audience increases his pursuit of perfection, and how mistakes can serve as a jumping off point in one’s creativity.
Whether on vibes, marimba, piano, or drums, Baltimore native Warren Wolf has grown into one of the most in-demand instrumentalists in jazz. In addition to his work as a 10+ year member of the SFJAZZ Collective, the Berklee alum has performed and recorded with Christian McBride’s Inside Straight, Tia Fuller, Joey DeFrancesco, Karriem Riggins, Bobby Watson, the Aaron Diehl Quartet, and his own group, WOLFPACK, among others.
His latest album, 2024’s “History of the Vibraphone,” pays tribute to the masters who have influenced him most, including Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, Gary Burton, Roy Ayers, Dave Samuels, and Joe Locke.
