Trumpeter, composer, and SFJAZZ Executive Artistic Director Terence Blanchard celebrates the centennials of jazz icons Miles Davis and John Coltrane, one of the great jazz partnerships of all time, with the brilliant saxophonist and composer Ravi Coltrane — John Coltrane’s son.
ABOUT TERENCE BLANCHARD
A savvy bandleader, celebrated film composer, brilliant jazz writer, and influential educator, GRAMMY-winning New Orleans native Terence Blanchard is a major creative force in the modern jazz scene. An active bandleader with dozens of recordings under his name, he cut his teeth with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and is among the most in-demand collaborators in jazz. He has composed over 40 movie scores and is an active composer for opera and television and was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2024.
ABOUT RAVI COLTRANE
Ravi Coltrane has established a sound and concepts that stand undeniably on their own, extending far beyond the shadow of his iconic name. Early experience in John Coltrane Quartet drummer Elvin Jones’ Jazz Machine and maverick saxophonist Steve Coleman’s M-Base movement helped build Coltrane’s expansive aesthetic, leading to a procession of increasingly audacious recordings as a leader and collaborator with artists including his mother, Alice Coltrane, and producer Flying Lotus.
Together, Blanchard and Coltrane will honor the legacy of Miles and ‘Trane, and their magical five-year partnership in Davis’s “First Great Quintet” that produced his four classic 1956 Prestige releases — Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’, and Steamin’ — as well as the late 50s Columbia Records landmarks Milestones and Kind of Blue.
