About this Clip:
The Bay Area’s own Rova Saxophone Quartet performs a piece composed by member Steve Adams and dedicated to pianist Cecil Taylor entitled “Those who…” during their November 12, 2021 performance at the SFJAZZ Center, broadcast on Fridays Live.
A treasured Bay Area ensemble whose connection to SFJAZZ goes back to the second Jazz in the City festival in 1984, the Rova Saxophone Quartet has consistently explored the fertile territory at the edges of composition and improvisation. Since their formation in 1978, the group has been both a generator of stimulating new compositions from members Bruce Ackley, Steve Adams, Larry Ochs, and Jon Raskin and a workshop for collaboration with many the visionary composers of the 20th and 21st century including Anthony Braxton, Alvin Curran, John Zorn, Steve Lacy, Terry Riley, Henry Threadgill, Wadada Leo Smith, Fred Frith, Nels Cline, Henry Kaiser, and Carla Kihlstedt, among others.
Rova returns for the first time since their January 2017 performance of their groundbreaking extended ensemble work Electric Ascension, conceived by tenor saxophonist Ochs as a radical interpretation and expansion of John Coltrane’s 1965 watershed composition Ascension, with guests Trey Spruance, Zeena Parkins, Fred Frith, and Gino Robair.
They perform new music composed during the past year as well as material from their new ESP-Disk’ release “The Circumference of Reason.”
