About the concert:
No pianist alive imbues the solo piano format with more explosive virtuosity or thrilling unpredictability than Hiromi Uehara – a GRAMMY-winning artist the All Music Guide calls “one of the most remarkable pianists of the past half century.” Debuting with the Czech Philharmonic at 14, the Hamamatsu, Japan native was mentored by Chick Corea and Ahmad Jamal early in her development, signing her first record deal with Telarc before graduating from Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Blending a foundation in classical repertoire with a deep feeling for the jazz tradition, she collaborated with Corea and Stanley Clarke, and led over a dozen albums in settings from quartet to solo piano.
But it is the solo recital that allows Hiromi to follow her creative muse unadorned and explore without restriction — a format memorialized on her superlative 2019 Concord Jazz solo album, Spectrum, a recording intended to be a celebration of the instrument’s full potential. Of that aim, DownBeat says, “few documents testify more powerfully than Spectrum.”
