From Atlantic and Blue Note to Impulse, Prestige, Verve and many others, these iconic record labels produced some of the world’s greatest jazz recordings and documented decades of the musical lexicon for fans around the globe. In this Discover Jazz series, guitarist, bandleader and educator Terrence Brewer guides us on a nostalgic look back at some of the greatest jazz albums of all time.

For our class on Atlantic Records, Brewer and friends highlighted the importance of the label in straddling the line between jazz, soul and other popular American music genres. The musical selections for this program cover a range of critically acclaimed artists and albums recorded between 1958 and 1970, tracing a line from hard bop and modal jazz to soul jazz. The excellent ensemble features Steven Lugerner on saxophones, Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Art Khu on piano, Ruth Davies on bass, Sylvia Cuenca on drums, and Brewer on guitar.
