Enter the mind of drummer, composer, and former SFJAZZ Collective member Obed Calvaire, as he takes us through his practice routine, his devotion to his craft, and the inspiration that motivates him to continually strive to improve all aspects of his art.
A Miami native of Haitian descent, Obed Calvaire is one of the most exciting drummers working today. A brilliant instrumentalist who made his mark with trombonist Steve Turre, Calvaire has performed and recorded with an impressive array of jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, Roy Hargrove, Maria Schneider, Bob Mintzer, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Mark Murphy, Sean Jones, Dave Holland, Mike Stern, Eric Reed, The Mingus Big Band, the Clayton Brothers and others.
He has also performed extensively in Afro-Cuban, R&B, pop and world music contexts, working with Richard Bona, Lizz Wright, Peter Cincotti, and Musiq Soulchild.
Calvaire holds a Masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music and was member of the SFJAZZ Collective from 2013 through 2020. He is currently a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
