Celebrating the Miles Davis centennial during a week of tribute performances at SFJAZZ, trumpeter Keyon Harrold and Miles’s nephew, Vince Wilburn Jr., share their takes on aspects of Miles’s career, from his best musical eras and albums to written biographies and the integration of hip-hop into his sound.
ABOUT MILES ELECTRIC BAND:
A group of stellar instrumentalists and fusion-era Miles Davis alumni come together as Miles Electric Band, a multi-generational group specializing in the wired-up and funky music Davis created from the late 1960s to the ‘80s on albums including Bitches Brew and You’re Under Arrest. Led by the legendary trumpeter’s nephew, drummer Vincent Wilburn, Jr., the band features several of the commanding musicians Davis tapped for his various jazz-rock ensembles, including keyboardist and Music Director Robert Irving III, bassist Darryl Jones, and percussionist Munyungo Jackson — all veterans of multiple Miles Davis tours and recordings from the late 80s and early 90s.
ABOUT KEYON HARROLD
With one foot firmly planted in jazz and the other in hip-hop and R&B, trumpeter Keyon Harrold has thrived by effortlessly navigating the kindred musical currents. Hailed as “the future of the trumpet” by Wynton Marsalis and mentored by trumpeter Charles Tolliver, Harrold has established himself as an improviser, vocalist, songwriter, producer, and studio ace via his work on recordings by Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Gregory Porter, and Maxwell. Robert Glasper recruited him to supply the trumpet work in Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, and his latest album is his Concord Jazz debut Foreverland.
