About the concert:
Great songs composed by women are the focus of this night, drawing from SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director and NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington’s new Hudson Music book “New Standards” and her subsequent Blue Note release that won the 2023 GRAMMY for Best Instrumental Jazz Album in early February.
As founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice, Carrington was dismayed by the lack of female representation in the so-called “Real Book” of jazz standards and curated the newly published compilation of New Standards composed by women including Carla Bley, Cassandra Wilson, Marilyn Crispell, Lil Hardin Armstrong, Eliane Elias, Jaime Branch, Luciana Souza, Hiromi, Emily Remler, Anat Cohen, and others. With this book and album, Carrington challenges inequity and forges a new legacy for jazz – a world of jazz without patriarchy. Joining her for this transformative show at SFJAZZ are some of the leading musicians from the current scene, most of whom appear on the new album: pianist Kris Davis, trumpeter Etienne Charles, vocalist Michael Mayo, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and guitarist Matthew Stevens.
