About this Clip:
Three months after his historic solo concert that marked the first public event at SFJAZZ since March 2020 and was called “a momentous occasion” by The San Francisco Chronicle, celebrated Cuban pianist Omar Sosa returns with the world premiere of Motherland Journey, an wildly innovative multimedia happening performed in collaboration with Kenyan-born visual artist Githinji Wa’Mbire and drummer Amaury Acosta that will employ SFJAZZ’s advanced new stage lighting and projection system for the first time.
For this event, Sosa and Acosta’s telepathic interplay on acoustic instruments and electronics will be joined by Wa’Mabire, who will create a sculpture on stage inspired by the music and will contribute his own sonic elements through the use of his tools, voice, and body that will trigger electronic audio and video components in real time.
An international favorite since he emerged on the Bay Area’s Latin scene in the 1990s, Sosa received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States, and has been nominated for multiple GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY awards.
Sosa’s last Alone Together performance was, in his words, the “reopening of the temple.” With its technological advancement, this world premiere event paves the way toward an exciting future.
