Marcus Shelby Nonet Feat. Skylar Tang: Birth of the Cool Revisited
In celebration of the centennial anniversary of trumpeter Miles Davis, the Marcus Shelby Nonet presents a special program featuring selections and reimaginations from the groundbreaking Miles Davis recording, Birth of the Cool (1949). The album represents the composite work of an innovative young genius at the beginning of his long and storied career and remains one of the most enduring recordings in the history of jazz. Joining Shelby and his Nonet is trumpeter, composer/arranger and SFJAZZ High School All-Stars alumnus Skyler Tang, who received a special commission from SFJAZZ to arrange a piece in tribute to Davis's historic recording. The Marcus Shelby Nonet features nine Bay Area-based master musicians, all of whom are also members of the Marcus Shelby Orchestra and have graced the stages at SFJAZZ over the years since our inaugural season at the SFJAZZ Center.
Birth of the Cool Revisited is part of a year-long centennial celebration in honor of trumpet icon Miles Davis. SFJAZZ is thrilled to honor Davis's life and musical legacy by amplifying this seminal recording and shine a light on the next generation of jazz trumpeters with special guest, Skylar Tang!
