For this exclusive interview, SFJAZZ Founder and Executive Artistic Director Randall Kline speaks to Miles Davis’ nephew, drummer Vincent Wilburn Jr., about the GRAMMY-nominated 2008 album Miles From India that brought together alumni from various Miles Davis bands and a number of Indian classical musicians. They discuss the origins of the project, how the album led to the formation of a performing ensemble, the illustrious members of the group, and how growing up with Miles Davis and the musicians around him affected his life and career. The all-star Miles From India band’s performance featuring Vincent Wilburn at the SFJAZZ Center in April 2017 was broadcasted on SFJAZZ’s Fridays at Five streaming concert series on 5/7/21.
