About this concert:
Musically traveling from the masters of jazz piano to the shimmering rhythms of Brazil, pianist, singer, and composer Eliane Elias and an all-star quartet perform sumptuous versions of songs from Elias’ two most recent Candid albums, 2021’s piano-centric GRAMMY-winner “Mirror Mirror” and 2022’s session devoted to sun-splashed Brazilian classics, “Quietude.”
Made up largely of jazz standards along with a pair of timeless pieces by late collaborator Chick Corea, “Mirror Mirror” was Elias’ first piano-only album in over 25 years and a summit meeting of piano giants featuring duos with Cuban icon Chucho Valdés and Corea, making one of his final recorded appearances before his untimely passing in February 2021. With an undeniable instrumental chemistry that DownBeat called “an artistic marvel,” “Mirror Mirror” won the 2022 GRAMMY for Best Latin Jazz Album.
Recorded in her hometown of São Paulo, “Quietude” showcases the other side of Elias’ talents, focused on classic Brazilian compositions by artists including Dorival Caymmi and Antônio Carlos Jobim and highlighted by Elias’ warm and evocative vocals. With instrumental contributions by guitarists Marcus Teixeira, Lula Galvão, and Oscar Castro-Neves, the album has a decidedly relaxed vibe that the leader describes this way: "I like to make music that I personally would like to hear. This album makes me feel good, at peace and relaxed, and I hope that listeners feel the same.”
